Why Is My Keyboard Split On My iPad?

Having your keyboard split in two on your iPad isn’t normal, and can be quite annoying. However, there are several different reasons why this may occur, and there are different methods you can use to fix it! But first, let’s take a look at some of the possible reasons your keyboard might be split on your iPad…

Restart the device

It sounds obvious, but a restart may be just what your tablet needs to get back into shape. If you don’t have access to power, make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi and use cellular data instead of using more battery power by turning off Wi-Fi. To turn it off and on, swipe up from the bottom of your screen, tap More in iOS 10, or slide an icon right in iOS 9 or earlier. Make sure you turn it back on again once you’ve restarted!

Reboot

Sometimes you can fix minor glitches in your iPad or iPhone by simply rebooting it. To do so, hold down both of the Power and Home buttons until you see an Apple logo (or a start-up screen, if you’re using iOS 10 or later). This doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try. And if rebooting doesn’t get things back to normal—or if you can’t even get into your device—you may have to perform one of several more advanced fixes.

Reset

If you think one of these keys is broken, start by resetting it. A simple reset of both hardware and software can make all your problems go away. To do so, hold down both Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds until you see Apple appear on the screen. When it does, release both buttons then press them again until you see slide to power off. Then, press and hold the Home button until you see a red slider appear. Drag the slider left then right then let go of it when the red slider disappears from the screen.

Contact Apple support

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned customer service call when things go sideways with your technology. As with any support call, you may be able to resolve the issue through conversation and troubleshooting (depending on what type of issue you’re having). Apple offers free support from real people, but keep in mind that these calls can take time—and it could easily be an hour before anyone picks up at all. Restore

If you have an older generation Apple product with a hardware split, you can easily fix it by performing a restore. First, turn off both devices and connect them with one long USB cable (try not to use any adapters). Hold down Option/Alt while starting up your older device. This should bring up Recovery Mode which you’ll be able to restore. Once complete, you should have one less thing to worry about. Use an external keyboard

If you have an external keyboard connected via Bluetooth, try using it for typing. If it works, that means there’s something wrong with your software settings or hardware. Now, enable Airplane Mode again and try reconnecting. Another option is to reset all settings, but make sure you don’t lose any data.
